LiveJournal was one of the world’s first social networks and blogging platforms. Since its launch in the US in 1999 it has registered 19 million accounts.

The site allows users to set up their own virtual diary and communicate with their friends by posting and receiving comments on each other’s entries. In many countries the site’s most popular functionality is the community aspect which allow users to engage each other on issues of common interest.

LiveJournal has a worldwide monthly audience of 19 million (Omniture) and 300 000 accounts added monthly.  7 million  of accounts are (TNS-Gallup) are Russian based. The number of active accounts totals 2.74million worldwide and 750,000 in the Cyrillic segment (LJ internal stats).

LiveJournal in Russia is effectively the Russian blogosphere. Before it was acquired by SUP, it was run under license from Six Apart. That relationship followed an agreement between both parties which was signed in October 2006. During this period the SUP team introduced many new features which helped grow the audience, these included: integrations with leading media sites; technical upgrades to improve the service; a new media site to provide a constantly updated summary of the best content available on the network.

According to Alexa Internet, LiveJournal.com is ranked in top-100 largest site worldwide, and  top-10 in Russia. In worldwide rating Compete on social networks and blog-platforms, LiveJournal was ranked 9th place.
